BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION
CAROLYN J. DOZIER, LCSW

Carolyn Dozier, LCSW
CREDENTIALS:

EXPERIENCE:

I have 24 years experience treating a broad-range of issues, among them childhood trauma, anxiety, depression, addictions, adult children of alcoholics, LGBTQ issues, couples work, managing stress, midlife crises, and anger management.

Before beginning in private practice, I worked in multiple settings, including a family service agency, community mental health centers, a psychiatric hospital, and residential programs for the chronically mentally ill.  In recent years, I worked as Director of Social Work at Goodwin House, Alexandria, a comprehensive care retirement community for the elderly.

TRAINING PROGRAMS POST GRADUATION:

Psychodrama, Hypnosis, EMDR, Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction

STYLE, THEORETICAL PERSPECTIVE, TECHNIQUES:

My style has been described by clients as warm, compassionate, and direct.  Psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, and systems theories are the most predominant perspectives that I use in my work, but I pull from many different sources in my approach to working with clients.

I use experiential techniques in addition to talk therapy, including EMDR, hypnosis, psychodrama, and art therapy.  Often these methods can help people move past their defenses and get to core issues.

The following is a list of some of the workshops I have presented over the years:  conflict resolution, couple's communication, stress management, prevention of abuse/neglect in healthcare settings, overcoming internalized homophobia, burnout prevention, dealing with difficult people, recovery from breaking up/divorce, coming out, easing the way for transgendered people and their co-workers in the workplace.
